A new 15-unit affordable housing facility opened in Calgary on Friday.

Located on Centre Street north in Highland Park, the Lomond is made up of two bedroom units for low to middle income families.

Two of the units are wheelchair accessible.

"For Calgary to continue being an economic leader, it is critical that we also continue to build quality infrastructure that is environmentally friendly" said Mayor Naheed Nenshi in a press release.

The building itself comes with some interesting "green" features.

"This building is 38 per cent more efficient than your standard building," says Councillor Brian Pincott.

"It's got cogeneration, so we generate electricity on site, and we use that waste heat to provide hot water and heating for the units. It's [got] triple-pane windows, it's got a roof top garden, it has - and this is ultimately cool - it's got an elevator that regenerates electricity so it actually throws electricity back into the building."

Residents of Lomond will have access to a number of parks and schools nearby as well as easy access to transit.

The Lomond project was a joint venture between the City of Calgary, the Alberta Government, and the builder Kanas Corporation.
